High life 20 More Days of School! ] Vol. LV No. 8 Grimsley High School, Greensboro, N.C. 27408 April 30, 1976 Council To Hold Spring Elections Elections for those upcoming juniors and seniors wishing to be on the 1976-77 Executive Council will be May 7, following a short campaign. Rising sophomores will hold elections next fall. Students will be allowed to vote only for those people running for office in their respective classes. The voting machines will be in the girls’ gym all day, allowing students to vote during study halls and lunch periods. An Election Committee has been formed to devise regulations and oversee the elections and campaigns. One new rule concerns the placement of banners. Posters in the halls and stairwells have been termed unsafe and a fire hazard; therefore, they will not be allowed in the campaigns. On the whole, the number of allowable banners has been incfeased over that in previous years. Also, a Constitution Committee has been set up. This committee has made the necessary revisions in the Grimsley Constitution to allow for spring elections. the following people comprise the Election Committee; Caroline John^n and Linda Simon, co-chairpersons, Richard Biller, Holleyjean Coward, Tom Essa, John Hepler, Patty Magid, and Tammy Murrelfe. News Briefs Congratulations to Ted Shields for being selected as Youth of the Month for the month of April. Congratulations are also in Drder to Susan McDaniel for winning first place in the Paul Revere Award In North Carolina i'ICA competition. The award was presented to Susan on the weekend of April 10. The award was judged on the basis of lutstanding skill development ind leadership qualities. For the second consecutive ?ear, three students from jrimsley have been honored with Sold Key Awards. This scholastic irt contest is an annual event iponsored by WFMY-TV and icholastic Magazine. The three itudents honored from Grimsley vere Mary Lithgo, Raymond fucker, and Eric Zschiesche. A&ry was also given two lertificates of merit for two other rorks which she submitted. Both the boys’ and the girls’ ROTC from Grimsley won many lonors in the JROTC competition leld at Raleigh during the I'eekend of April 10. The boys’ earn took 1st place in the ndividual drill with arms, and nd place in the fancy drill. The ;irls’ team took 2nd place in the egulation drill without arms. The ROTC team from Grimsley also laimed the Caldwell Trophy as he best all-around unit. Senior Awards Day (Class Day) as been set for Friday, May 28. Semester exams will begin on londay. May 31. NHS Inducts 48 New Members Let me [?] be your “Teddy Bear.’’ Essa Claims Beauty Prize Tom Essa was crowned Mr. Grimsley, 1976 in the ’Womanless Beauty Pageant, Thursday night, April 8, in the Grimsley auditorium. Twelve Grimsley males served as contestants, parading bodies and talents before a large audience. The contestants were: John Allen, Robert Bingham, Tom Essa, Curtis Fields, Joe Freeman, Lester Gross, Kenneth Hayes, Greg Johnson, Jimmy King, Ted Shields, Tom Spang ler, and Drew Williams. Following the introductions, the contestants backed up “The Onz’' (Brad Osborne) as he sang ‘Teddy Bear’. The contestants then appeared in the swimsuit competition. At that time, the Mistress of Ceremonies, Ms. Donna Dodd, gave their vital statistics. Prior to the talent competition, Lester Gross was presented with Mr. Congeniality Award. The contestants displayed a variety of talents. The five finalists were: Robert Bingham, Tom Essa, Lester Gross, Ted Shields, and Drew Williams. Final judging was based on the manner in which each contestant answered a random question. On the basis of these answers, the guys were given the following awards; Lester Gross, fifth, Ted Shields, fourth, Robert Bingham, third. Drew Williams, runner-up and Tom Essa, Mr. G. Master of Ceremonies for the pageant was J. Stuart Pirrung II. The judges were: Ms. D. Leonard, Ms. Sroog, Mrs. T. Coble, and Ms. Hall. Music was presented by Thursday Night Live. David Kennett crowned the king in the absence of last year’s king, Neil Dunnavant. Mr. Kennett won the pageant in 1974. Torchlight, Grimsley’s chapter of the National Honor Society, held its spring induction ceremony on Tuesday, April 13. 23 seniors and 25 juniors were inducted, making a total of 48 new members. The ceremony commenced with a solo on the cello by Mike Matthews. Ann Martinelli, the President of Torchlight, then welcomed an estimated group of 200 and gave a brief explanation of the National Honor Society. Eric Miller than followed with the reading of the charter. Short speeches were then presented on the five qualifications for membership. Ann Martinelli presented a speech on know ledge; Mark Puterbaugh, scholar ship; Ted Shields, service; Vonnie Hendrickson, leadership; and Elliot Shoenthal, character. The new members were than inducted and presented with their official membership cards as Mike Matthews played back ground music on his cello. In order to receive membership in Torchlight, a student must either be a junior or a senior with a 3.4 cummulative average. A list of all those students who meet this qualification is passed on to the teachers, who vote for or against these students. A special committee headed by the advisors, Mrs. Oakley and Mrs. Manahan, makes the final selections. Present officers of Torchlight include: Ann Martinelli, Presi dent; Eric Miller, Vice-President; Meredith Morris, Secretary; and the Treasurer, Vonnie Hendrick son. Special thank go to the advisors, Mrs. Oakley and Mrs. Manahan. Talented Teachers Shine On April 1st the Junior Class presented the first annual Faculty Foolies, with some 26 teachers participating. The show was presented as the Junior’s money making project. The show was termed a “Big success’’ by Junior Class President Tom Essa. He also stated that a “great deal” of money was earned from the show. Essa also stated that “The Junior Class would like to thank all of the teachers who participated in the show.” He added, “We would especially like to thank Mrs. Strupp, without her help, the show would not have been possible.” Mrs. Strupp’s homeroom won the prize for selling the most tickets. The Door Decorating Contest was won by homeroom 621, which is Mrs. Jessup’s John Hepler won the grand prize of $15 as the student who sold the greatest quantity of tickets. The show opened with the song “Willhomer, Bienvenu, Wel come,” which was performed by Joanne Bradner. Mr. Parrish then introduced himself as the emcee for the evening. He was followed by Debi Hawkins, who performed the song “Cabaret.” The show was then taken over by the teachers as Ms. Dodd, Ms. Hall, and Ms. S Jroog, better known as “The Angel Cakes” performed for the approving audience the song “Sweet Talkin’ Guy.” Mrs. Strupp and her Dancing Dolls were the entertainers for Act II, as they danced to the tune of “My Little Maggie.” Mr. Garner, in one of the highlights of the evening, proceeded to “take it off” in front of a most surprised auidience to the appropriate tune of “The Stripper” as performed by the “Junior Jazz.” The show ended with “The Dirty Dozen Dancing Dames” f ‘Angel Cakes” sweet talk their audience. ^ i* m At the end of this year. Torchlight will present a $200 scholarship to one of its members. Scholarships Awarded to GHS Seniors Over the past few weeks, seniors at Grimsley High School have received scholarships and awards to help them with their further education. Thus far the following achievements have been announced: Ann Martinelli won a More- head Scholarship to UNC-G, an award valued at approximately $2,500 per year. Students recommended for the scholarship were interviewed by county, district, and state committees. Eric Miller has been named a winner of a National Achievement Award, which applies to a college of choice. This $1,000 scholarship was sponsored by the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. He plans to study chemistry at Harvard University. Eric has also won a Carswell Scholarship to Wake Forest University. Susan Hauser and Velda Kelly have won National Achievement Awards. In addition, Susan has been offered a Carswell Scholar ship. Phil Kaldon is a winner of the four-year National Merit Scholar ship. His scholarship, based on competition among juniors in the PSAT NMSQT testing, is provided by CIBA-GEIGY. He is among 1,300 seniors whose names were announced April 8th. It is valued at $1000 to $6000 over the undergraduate years of college. Shelley Ashworth, a student who has recently moved to Greensboro from New York, has been accepted into the first class for women at West Point Military Academy.' Shelley chose to apply at the Academy because of the educational opportunities offered there.
